History of The Man

Home > History of The Man > July 1-15

The Man is always up to his dirty little tricks. Let's take a step back and review the timeline of The Man and the fight against Him in history:

July 1:

1971 - Golden Gate Bridge paid for (so why is there still a toll?).

July 2:

1987 - President Reagan nominated federal appeals court judge Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court, setting off a tempestuous confirmation process that ended with Bork's rejection by the Senate.

1991 - President Bush nominated federal appeals court judge Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, beginning a confirmation process marked by allegations of sexual harassment.

July 3:

1988 - U.S. Navy shoots down Iranian civilian jetliner over Gulf, kills 290.

July 4:

July 5:

1984 - Supreme Court weakens 70-year-old "exclusionary rule"-evidence seized with defective court warrants can now be used in criminal trials.

July 6:

1535 - English Catholic theologian Thomas More was beheaded for refusing to recognize Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church of England, which had just broken with the Roman Catholic Church.

July 7:

1987 - Lt Col Oliver North began public testimony at Iran-Contra hearing.

July 8:

July 10:

1985 - The Man got shut down. Coca-Cola Company announces it will resume selling old formula Coke.

Of course, the "old formula" ain't so old because in 1980 Coke (sadly) permitted its bottlers to substitute high-fructose corn sweetener for the beet and cane sugar once used. The result - the previously crisp and bracing taste was sadly blunted. Conspiracy by The Establishment. (More of the Straight Dope)

July 11:

1656 - Ann Austin and Mary Fisher became the first Quakers to arrive in America and were promptly arrested. Five weeks later, they were deported back to England. (Mayflowerfamilies.com)

1812 - The United States invades Canada.

July 12:

1933 - Congress passes 1st minimum wage law (.33 per hour).

1996 - Talk show host Morton Downey Jr., a boardmember of the National Smokers Alliance and notorious for smoking on the air, undergoes lung cancer surgery at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles.

July 13:

1863 - Anti-draft mobs lynch blacks in NYC; about 1,000 die.

July 14:

1987 - Lt Col Oliver North concludes 6 days of Congressional testimony.

July 15:

1869 - Margarine is patented in Paris, for use by French Navy. And they make fun of American food!
